What B.C. dealers are actually charging

A calculator assumes a sticker price. Dealers move on price, rate, fees and your trade-in, and the only way to know by how much is to ask more than one of them.

Car loans in B.C.: common questions

How much is PST on a car in B.C.?

B.C. charges 7% PST on a passenger vehicle under $55,000 bought from a dealer, plus 5% GST, for 12% in total. The PST rate steps up to 8% from $55,000, 9% from $56,000, 10% from $57,000, 15% from $125,000 and 20% from $150,000, and the higher rate applies to the whole price.

Does a trade-in lower the tax I pay in B.C.?

Yes. When you trade a vehicle in at a dealer, GST and PST are charged on the price after the trade-in value is deducted. That is why a trade-in often saves more than a cash down payment of the same amount.

What is a good car loan rate in B.C.?

Bank and dealer rates move with the Bank of Canada rate and your credit. Buyers with strong credit often see roughly 6–9%, while manufacturer promotions can go as low as 0–3% on specific models. Check this month’s promotions for advertised rates.

How long can I finance a car for?

Most lenders in B.C. offer 24 to 96 months. A longer term lowers the payment but costs more interest and raises the chance of owing more than the car is worth.
